The Bos t'Ename woodland preserve is both precious and vulnerable. Rare plant species and vegetation can be easily destroyed by trampling and rare animal species need an undisturbed habitat to flourish.

Because of this, only a small part of the Bos t'Ename is open to the public. This central area is the least vulnerable part of the forest and its accessibility to the public is an important part of its socio-cultural value. The footpath offers visitors an instructive and enjoyable walk through varied scenery and provides splendid panoramic views of the Scheldt valley.

Part of the footpath in winter.

The path begins and ends at the Museum t'Ename and was named after the Antwerp botanist Mariette Tielemans, member of the society for nature conservation De Wielewaal. During one of her walks in this area, she was particularly impressed by the Bos t'Ename. She bequeathed two thirds of her personal estate to the society to buy part of the nature reserve. By naming the path after her we want to honour her and all the volunteers who support the Bos t'Ename project financially and/or practically. The path was inaugurated during the Feeste t'Ename on 9 August 1998.
