Detail of a map of the abbey in 1730
Because of the archaeological significance of a section of the site lying south of the main building complex, a decision has been taken to leave approximately 6 hectares (15 acres) unexcavated so that scholars of future generations may also have an opportunity to examine the area in detail. This part of the site included the medieval abbey gardens. Current plans to incorporate this zone into the archaeological park include the establishment of a reconstructed garden showing the historical evolution of gardening from the Carolingian period to the 18th century. The adjoining abbey ditches and earthworks will also be restored.
